Rear View Rare View
The Month Of…
A few years back (2015 to be precise), I visited a friend of mine – Myrtle Stewards – at her new place in Pretoria. She had just moved there, started a new job and I owed her a visit.
In attempts to pay my dues, the Charleen Mahery-Sithole way; after seeing SA Idols auditions adverts, I suggested she and I go audition at the State Theatre one weekend – seeing that we’re both singers. She was in and we made it happen. Ons is mos so gebore, mense wat dinge laat gebeur… wakena?
I arrived on a Friday evening and what a joy it was being reunited with a mate my soul loves after such a long time.♥
Okay… blaze-blah, woopti-woo – to cut a long story short: we had a herb session and she introduced me to a white girl called Alessia Cara that I somehow just vibrated with instantly.
I found her quite refreshing and soulful; not the typical Jazzy-Loungey soulful but an innocent type of soulful – if that makes any sense. Her voice was a little high-pitched but it had a husk to it that lured me to listen; her lyrics, on the other hand, were beautifully written and relatable.
I have a thing for words. Words are powerful beyond measure, especially if juxtaposed ‘the right way’. Her lyrics portrayed that perfectly.
That was enough… I was sold and got to learn a little bit about this beautiful, extraordinary musician.
This month I dedicate to sharing this artist with you through a #RearView of her and lyrics from my favourite Alessia songs; therefore we will March to this musical gem!
Alessia Caracciolo, known professionally as Alessia Cara is a Canadian singer and songwriter was born July 11, 1996. She’s basically Born-Free in South African terms but it’s whatever
As a child, the currently 21 year old wrote poetry and did theatre. She began playing guitar at the age of 10 and taught herself how to play various songs.
At the age of 13, the Italian honey began her own YouTube channel where she posted covers of songs that she performed. After producing acoustic covers she signed with Def Jam Recordings and released her debut single, “Here“.
Which is one of my favourite songs and one of the first to land in my ears actually. She basically narrates how everyone secretly hates parties – well, I don’t know about everyone but she voices how I tend to feel when I’m out.
From there on it was all-roads-gwaan for her and how grateful I am to be blessed with her talents in this physical lifetime.♥
She went on to collaborate with quite a number of made artists and won plenty awards. even a Grammy… Levels!!!
I’ll post some of my favourite songs by her throughout this March; you can however check out her 2015 album titled “Know It All” and enjoy.
I hope 2018 is the year of a new album from Alessia, I’ve been waiiiiiiting!
Peace and Blessings,
