The Month Of…

♥Alessia Cara♥

A few years back (2015 to be precise), I visited a  friend of mine – Myrtle Stewards – at her new place in Pretoria. She had just moved there, started a new job and I owed her a visit.
In attempts to pay my dues, the Charleen Mahery-Sithole way; after seeing SA Idols auditions adverts, I suggested she and I go audition at the State Theatre one weekend – seeing that we’re both singers. She was in and we made it happen. Ons is mos so gebore, mense wat dinge laat gebeur… wakena?

I arrived on a Friday evening and what a joy it was being reunited with a mate my soul loves after such a long time.♥
Okay… blaze-blah, woopti-woo – to cut a long story short: we had a herb session and she introduced me to a white girl called Alessia Cara that I somehow just vibrated with instantly.

Alessia Cara On Stage

I found her quite refreshing and soulful; not the typical Jazzy-Loungey soulful but an innocent type of soulful – if that makes any sense. Her voice was a little high-pitched but it had a husk to it that lured me to listen; her lyrics, on the other hand, were beautifully written and relatable.
I have a thing for words. Words are powerful beyond measure, especially if juxtaposed ‘the right way’. Her lyrics portrayed that perfectly.
That was enough… I was sold and got to learn a little bit about this beautiful, extraordinary musician.

This month I dedicate to sharing this artist with you through a #RearView of her and lyrics from my favourite Alessia songs; therefore we will March to this musical gem!

Rear View:

Alessia Caracciolo, known professionally as Alessia Cara is a Canadian singer and songwriter was born July 11, 1996. She’s basically Born-Free in South African terms but it’s whatever
As a child, the currently 21 year old wrote poetry and did theatre. She began playing guitar at the age of 10 and taught herself how to play various songs.
At the age of 13, the Italian honey began her own YouTube channel where she posted covers of songs that she performed. After producing acoustic covers she signed with Def Jam Recordings and released her debut single, “Here“.
Which is one of my favourite songs and one of the first to land in my ears actually. She basically narrates how everyone secretly hates parties – well, I don’t know about everyone but she voices how I tend to feel when I’m out.

From there on it was all-roads-gwaan for her and how grateful I am to be blessed with her talents in this physical lifetime.♥
She went on to collaborate with quite a number of made artists and won plenty awards. even a Grammy… Levels!!!Alessia-Cara-Best-New-Artist-Grammy.jpg

I’ll post some of my favourite songs by her throughout this March; you can however check out her 2015 album titled “Know It All” and enjoy.
I hope 2018 is the year of a new album from Alessia, I’ve been waiiiiiiting!

Peace and Blessings,

Recently came across this young, Texan, grizzly bear; with a remarkable voice – might I spice – when an acquaintance of mine played a song of his “Location” on our drive to our herbalist.

I was taken aback by his laid-back, casual and effortless sound. Soft, subtle, somewhat spiritual singing. The kind that VVVIP-tag passes through your ears; right through your mind, heart & soul and settles in your being.

I wanted more!!!

Now, apparently this Khaled has been making the waves… Me not being aware of this is pretty normal, I never know what’s trending and I don’t really care to seek it out of daily living. I’ve always been the trendsetter anyway. (Yes, of cause.)

I got home later that evening and checked him out. The greatest thing I did for myself at that point – I fell in love.

Khalid Robinson (born February 11, 1998), known mononymously as Khalid (pronounced ‘KUH-LeeD’), is an American singer and songwriter from El Paso, Texas. He is signed to Right Hand Music Group and RCA Records. He is best known for his debut single, “Location“, which has peaked at number 16 on the US Billboard Hot 100 which is currently his highest-charting single and has gone platinum – (Wikipedia)

I got his album, American Teen and listened to it all night and all day. I could not believe all that soul seeped out of a 19 year old (At first I couldn’t believe he’s 19 but abelungu bathi ‘Don’t judge a book blaze-blah-woopti-woo’.) I thought they don’t make them like this anymore,

From the first track – which is also the title of his debut album – American Teen, I got Goosebumps!!!

“American Teen is the debut studio album by American R&B recording artist Khalid. It was released on March 3, 2017, by Right Hand Music Group and RCA Records. The album was supported by the singlesLocation“, and “Young Dumb & Broke””

The album begins with 2 vibey tracks – American Teen and Young, Dumb & Broke (A personal favourite) – and switches right on to hit single, Location. From there, all the soul is spilled into your ears with mellow and soulful songs that you will want to listen to over-and-over again.

I love every song on the album; I however have a few real favourites like:

  • Young, Dumb & Broke
  • Location
  • Coaster
  • Cold Blooded
  • Winter
  • Therapy
  • Shot Down
  • Angels
  • Hopeless

Once you check it out, you’ll realise that list of favourites is basically the whole album.

As new as this is, I can’t wat for another offering from him. I get the sense that this is just the tip of the iceberg; maturity and experience will breed a beast out of this Texan Grizzly Bear (Who I find so Yum-Yum-And-Dope). I look forward to whatever else he has to offer in the future.

He’s my man crush every day! I’m such a fan!!!

Charleen Mahery

It’s been a while since I’ve interacted through this page – forgot my password and frankly, my fire for blogging was amiss – but I’m trying to change that and use it like before – probably a little better even.

I’ll still share my poetry and also share other writing I do and my music.

I’ll share bits and pieces of my self too; my mood, my motivation, the music I like, books, holiday destinations, and basically everything I find interesting and worth allowing to linger in my mind.

I’m a lover of all things beautiful and I am open to interactions with like-minded individuals. Lets connect!

Enjoy the Sunday and have a glorious week!
